Randy, I grew up playing a lot of chess. Never in a tournament, but I did get some tutoring from a Master player when I was about 10 or 11 years old. I used to devour books on the openings and various gambits. Played Sargon Chess on the Commodore 64. I still have my father's childhood hand-carved wooden chess set. It may be time to pull it out for a game or two.
I remember Sargon. That was a few years ago. I played it on my first PC.
Randy - best of luck. Sounds like a fun event for those into Chess. I have played a little but it is not really my thing, but I sure admire those who can play and excell at it.
Jeff
Randy - can't wait to hear how many of your students turn out to be winners - please keep us updated on the progress.
Randy I know that your sons are very good players, will they be able to compete in this?
I am amazed at how good some people are at this game...just like other games...it takes a great love to be great in what ever you do.
Take a photo. I think I am the only person on the planet of Earth that has never plaid a game of chess in their life. Not checkers either. Mommy, what's wrong with me?
Jeff - I am in that other group. Those who can't teach. I teach beginners and organize the events. This is one of the few tournaments that I play in.
Sharon - I am sure a couple of them will tag me at this event.
George - My oldest has a high school football game tonight and won't be playing. My youngest, although a 1st grade champion, is not ready to play open events against the top adults yet.
Chris - Life is not complete without chess. It is not too late. :)
Hey, Randy.
I played competive chess until I graduated from Texas A&M University, then business took over. I taught a few semesters at a community college here back in 1994-95 and was a member of the Balboa Park Chess Club. I used to do a lot of chess by mail, but then it turned into computer chess by mail and I think I was the only one trying to exercise my mind. Everyone else was simply trying to win. I still play weekly against the computer on my Kasparov Sensor Chess. It's a real chessboard; takes me away from the computer for a little while each day.
Russel - I wish I had more time to study and play. My game has been slipping the last few years. The youngsters are starting to tear me up.
Randy, do they have competitive Monopoly out there? That's my game!
By the way, I think it is really great that you are into chess!
we grew up with some neighbors who were of Russian descent. Their children at age 5 and daughter age 6 could beat anyone who was high school age.
Patricia - I think real estate is competitive Monopoly. LOL I am not familiar with anything organized for Monopoly.
Scott - I and both of my boys started chess at age 5. I have had chess students as young as 4.
Randy: I must be tired. Glancing at the title to this blog I thought it said CHEESE not CHESS. I was curious about Hawaiian cheese. I need some coffee.
Chris - Too funny.
