Hawaii Randy's Real Estate Opinions: Was 2007 Fun? It Was For Me.

Was 2007 Fun? It Was For Me.

CelebrationAs I get to the end of 2007 I felt I needed to reflect on this past year and get ready to hit the ground hard for 2008.

For 2007 it was a year with some highs and some lows.  I will be finishing the year below the aggressive goals I set for sales and personal.

The year started a little on the slow side.  I spent much of December in and out of the hospital at the end of 2006 and most of January and part of February recovering from a surgery and then some complications.  As you know what you work on today comes in later in real estate.  Even with the set back, I think I had a decent year compared to what I am hearing from others.  I have no complaints.

I made some changes to the processes I use for my business with mixed results.  After scrapping Top Producer® I brought in Relay® for my transaction management.  I have now temporarily gone back to using Excel spread sheets, which seem to be faster and easier.  It just keeps me from easily sharing documents with others.  In 2008 I am planning to try another product.  I am determined to build the systems so as to be able to build a quality team with proper support.

On the team front, Donna Shefcheck got her license and has begun to work with me.  We are going through a little trial and error to get our systems in place.  We closed our first transaction together and she has a lot of energy.  I am working with a couple of other new agents on a transactional basis.  It is too early to tell if they will be team members in the future.

This year I helped several folks in their first homes and received referrals from friends and past clients.  I also received some referrals through Active Rain and a some new clients found me through my blog posts and Active Rain.

On a personal level I finished the diet I was one since mid 2006.  I lost about 185lbs. and have maintained my weight since August or September, which I am quite proud of. My oldest son's high school varsity football team won their division and I was able to attend all but one scrimmage game.  My youngest son played soccer in two leagues, one which I coached and I attended almost every game.  Both were significant improvements from years past and a goal I have made for the future.  It is so easy to get lost in your work and neglect your family.  My wife and I have seen more of each other than years past, but we still need to work on that a lot more.

We all need to remember why we work so hard.  It is for our family.

During this year I have continued to be involved heavily in the community and with the Board of REALTORS®.  I love doing community activities and they are also good for business.

So looking back on 2007 I have to ask the question:  Are we having fun yet?  For me the answer was yes.

Good luck in your 2008 planning.  May you and your family have a Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas in Hawaiian) and a Haoule Makiki Hou (Happy New Years in Hawaiian)

Interesting is the word I'll use but in the end I ended up with a few more deals at the finish-line which is great for the way things are around RE land. To a much better ...less compliant type of 2008 to both of us!

Randy, I know I've said it before but your weight lost is incredible!!! Kudos to you my friend for sticking to it. It really is a testament to your character. It does sound like you are starting to have good balance in your life. That's a very good thing.

Glad to have met you via Active Rain. Was that a typo or what? You LOST 185 lbs. That's simply mind boggling. How did you do it? I'd like to lose 1/3 of that and I'd be so delighted to do so. Anyway, wishing you a great 2008. Nice meeting you on AR and wish you continued success. BTW, I am going to start the year with Top Producer and see how it goes. Despite its clumsiness and bugginess, I was not able to find anything that has nearly the functionality in terms of integrating to the MLS and doing sopohisticated comps. To me that was worth the price of admission.

If I took my son and I moved to Hawaii Iwould be in Utopia.

I really hope, wish, and pray that you have a major 2008. One that is outstanding.

Meanwhile I bust up the ice chucks, and move around some snow, I will think how I enjoyed always reading and responding to your posts.

Linda - Thank you.

Jeff - I look forward to seeing you there.

Bryant - Thank you, I still need to improve on the family time.  I am sure that is true of many of us in this industry.

Ann - Thank you, I am sure you will also have a great 2008.

Ron - TP didn't integrate with our MLS.  That was another problem for me.  I went on a strict program through our local medical association.  I am still on the program even after losing the weight to be sure I keep it off.  I also go to the YMCA and work out in the mornings.

Maggie - Hard work and dedication.  It also helped that I got a couple of medical scares that put me on the straight and narrow.  Since losing the weight my health is great.

Jesse and Kathy - Thank you

Thank you

Tom - I also like reading your posts.  Being born in Racine and growing up in Chicago I like staying up on that part of the world.  I love it here in paradise and would never move back, but I like visiting.

Randy....  sounds like a decent year compared to so many, especially with your setbacks in regards to the hospital and such. And in regards to you losing 185lbs?  That's awesome... what a great accomplishment above so many other things. And I like your family picture.  Happy Holidays and to a better 2008.

185 pounds is amazing!  I lost 120 and have kept it off too - going on 6 years now.  It's doable!!!  I too fell short of some of my goals, and had a very traumatic year (perhaps that story is my next blog), but all in all, I will rate 2007 as a very good year, and set high expectations for 2008.

Here's to 2008!

Sally - It will be a great 2008.  We live in paradise and work out of a wonderful office.

Jeff - Thank you and have a terrific 2008.

Dawn - I also did not meet all of my goals in 2007, but had a good year.  Congratulations on the weight loss.  That is a huge accomplishment.

Good grief, Randy - 185 pounds?!?!?!?  I spend many months losing 60 so I KNOW what's involved. My assistant lost 100, and she's a different person.  Congratulations many times over on losing 185 pounds - I can just imagine what that meant! Having accomplished that personal goal in 2007 (and it will really help your business as well) you can accomplish ANYTHING you want for 2008!
