Hawaiian 12 Days of Christmas

In Hawaii, we have our own Pidgin version of Twelve Days of Christmas song:Nativity

Here is the last verse:  Numbah (number) 12 day of Christmas, my Tutu (grand mother) gave to me:

  • 12 television
  • 11 cans of spam
  • 10 missionary
  • 9 ukulele
  • 8 pounds of poi
  • 7 shrimp a'swimmin'
  • 6 hula lesson
  • 5 big fat pig
  • 4 flower lei
  • 3 dried squid
  • 2 coconut &
  • 1 mynah bird in one papaya tree

The numbers and words are pronounced in proper pidgin, making this truley a local version.

The official dictionary for Pidgin is called: Pidgin to Da Max.

Jay and Francy - There are two problems with that. 

  1. They have been a few local musicians record variations of the song and I would not want to risk getting sued.
  2. If I were to be the singer people would be checking their speakers thinking they were blown.

This morning I was going to post the Pidgin' "Da Night Bafo Christmas" (great minds think alike!), but then I know I would be copyright infringing. The lyrics are hilarious, by Kathy Collins. If anyone wants to hear it, try to find the CD titled "Moonbows For Christmas".

George - I got tricked many years into singing Jingle Bell Rock at an industry Christmas Party.  People are still telling stories and jokes about that event.

Michael - The other I love is Frank DeLima's Filipino version for the 12 Days of Christmas.  My wife is Filipino so we play it at family gatherings.

Thankyou for that link! I never knew any of that. In fact, I had heard a song "over the rainbow" on TV and the way it was sung haunted me. I tracked it down by googling the song and listening to a hundred different renditions until I found it and it was IZ. I then proceeded to buy two of his CD's. This was two years ago and it wasn't until after I bought the CD's that I found out he had died in 1997!!! I still listen to them, what a Voice and what a shame.

Randy-The twleve days of Christmas in Hawaiian is my favorite!  The best version I heard is by Frank Delima.  He is nutso to start with and his rendition makes it even funnier.

Karen - When I came to Hawaii I was so happy to find that Cecilio and Kapono were here.  I used to listen to C&K in Chicago.  I have since them many times in person.  One of the great things in Hawaii is our music industry.

I wonder if anyone can help me.  I need the words to Christmas in Honolulu by Frank Delima for my kid.  I e-mailed Frank and he put the song on his website.  however I cannot hear very well and so far my kid and I figured out all the words except the last stanza.  Sandcastles are like snowmen, neither is built to last,....We can't figure out the next two lines.  If anybody can go to his website and hear it for me please let us know what it says.  It is for a school ting.  Thanks!  Mark and jason
