Hawaii Randy's Real Estate Opinions: You Might Consider Another Line of Work

You Might Consider Another Line of Work

Jeff Foxworthy has, “you might be a redneck.”  I have, “you might consider another line of work.”

If you are a real estate agent or a loan officer and:

1)      You don’t put your client’s needs ahead of yours; you might consider another line of work.

2)      You don’t return phone calls on a timely basis; you might consider another line of work.

3)      You are not getting properly trained; you might consider another line of work.

4)      You don’t like people and you can’t treat everyone exactly the same; you might consider another line of work.

5)      If you are not willing to work as many hours as it takes to get the job done; you might consider another line of work.

6)      If you turn off your phone on the weekends; you might consider another line of work.

7)      If you can’t follow a timeline; you might consider another line of work.

8)      If you think a closing date is only an estimate; you might consider another line of work.

9)      If you think a deposit is the opposite of posite; you might consider another line of work.

10)   You believe a deed is something a boy scout does at least once a day; you might consider another line of work.

11)   You think a closing is when they turn the lights out at your office and lock the doors; you might consider another line of work.

12)   You order a survey and they e-mail a list of questions to your friends; you might consider another line of work.

13)    You think a carport is a truck that carries several cars; you might consider another line of work.

14)   You believe a counter offer is used to buy a counter; you might consider another line of work.

15)   You think a short sale is a fast one; you might consider another line of work.

16)   You think an addendum tells you who the speakers are at a meeting; you might consider another line of work.

17)   You think a covenant is a religious cult; you might consider another line of work.

18)   Last but not least, you think escrow is something you get in a French restaurant; you might consider another line of work.

The behavior of many loan officers and real estate agents has gotten pretty bad.  I can’t tell you how many phone and e-mail messages a week I send, that go unanswered.  My time and my client’s time seem to have little value to many.  You know they are not returning their client’s messages either in these cases.

The number of poorly written contracts and untrained agents is mind blowing.  I have crossed swords with many loan officers who do not care about the unnecessary stress they put their clients through.

Hi Randy,

Frustration has prompted many a blog post.

Now you have this off your chest.

Tell us about the beautiful state of Hawaii, and the homes available there.

Randy, thanks so much for the tips on professionalism, which is a must in our industry. I miss Hawaii, I use to live in Waiklele when I was stationed at Schofield Barracks.

Good morning, Randy. I'm disappointed. Here I thought that escrow was that fancy-dancy snail meal served in those swanky restaurants...

Randy:  I believe we've all experienced at least one of those items on your well written list.  We all need a reminder about the many intricacies of the transaction...whether it's returning a phone call, remembering we aren't a principal in the deal or just that this job takes alot of hours so reward yourself when you can.

Good morning Randy. Great list. Number #8 is too close for comfort though. How many lenders think a closing date is a hopeful target. lol

Michael B. – I live next to Schofield in Mililani.

Michael T. – I bet there are many other out there.

Gwynn – I think it is good to get a regular reminder.

Randy O. – I am dealing with a lender currently who thinks they set the closing date and could care less what is in the contract

William – Thank you

Randy -- You posted a good list. I beg to differ with you on item 4.  I am in favor of equal treatment of minorities and fair housing issues.

However a client who shows no regard for the value of my time will not get equal treatment to a client who does his/her part in doing some of the work.

I recently "fired" a Buyer when I discovered that she had NO DECISION PROCESS whatever. I also discovered that she had worked with no less than four other agents in my office. Her pattern was to work with an agent until each grew weary of being used, then on to find another agent.

RE: #15

The first time that I told my wife that I had written an offer on a short sale house, she said, “Great! Now you will get paid quickly”.

Right! Talk about unclear about the concept…

Randy, the phone thing is my biggest pet peeve as a broker.  I'm still waiting on a return call from last Monday.  I have a cash buyer who wants a specific house, but the agent can't seem to call back.  Very frustrating.

This is so funny but then again it's sad because so much of it is true!  I'm with Mike and my ultimae pet peeve is the not returning phone calls!  It seems like this is becoming the norm in today's market.  Not sure why but so many agents just are not considerate today.

John J. – Maybe we should come with a new name for them.

Mike C. – A daily part of my day is chasing people who do not respond to messages.

Scott F. – All based on reality.

Shelly S. – Thank you

Fernando – It is not hard, I just write about what I see.

Don. T – It is fun not, not when we are living it.

Yvette – It is in every field.  We also have to deal with it when we do business in other areas.

Chuck C. – It is about 90% among the loan officers I recommend.  It has been 10% or less with out of state lenders for me.

Michael S. – It is 6:30am in Hawaii and I have already sent several e-mails to people that hit more than one item on my list.

Kathy S. – Thank you

Gary W. – I am seeing it with regular sales, with out of state lenders and brokers.  For short sales we automatically brace ourselves for extreme pain and lots of time.

Susan H. – I guess it is better to laugh than bang our heads against the wall.

Sherri W. – It is definitely a huge problem and getting worse.

Joy D. – I would look forward to meeting you in person.  Contact me anytime.

Ruthmarie H. – Dishonesty will always get them at some point.  One day they will be in court and all they think they made will be lost.

Gene M. – Funny when reading over coffee.  Not so funny when on the other side of a transaction with someone making my list.

Barb M. – That is a great line!

David - You are right. Those who got out, may have figured this out sooner. By choice or not by choice.

Cheryl - The sent box in my e-mail is full this morning from chasing people who have not responded to calls and e-mails.  I now get to send out voice mails next.  Not a fun way to waste Monday morning.  It gets under my skin so much, that I preach about this at the CE classes I teach and in many of my blog posts.  It does feel a little better after I vent.  Have a great week!

I love this list but really had to laugh at the short sale one. I have been asked the question about short sales being short multiple times, even recently. It's clear there are many misconceptions by consumers. And perhaps even some agents who purpost to be short sale experts.
