Hawaii Randy's Real Estate Opinions: They Promise to Put Me on Page 1 of Google®

They Promise to Put Me on Page 1 of Google®

Every Monday I get a series of phone calls from folks promising me everything from 100 pre-qualified leads a month to getting me on page 1 of Google®.  The phone may start ringing between 4am and 5am.  I noticed that 90% of these calls come on Monday.  These folks seem to only work one day a week.

These people from New York or India or wherever they are, who claim to be in tune with my business and its needs have no idea what time it is in Hawaii.

The call I seem to get the most is from the SEO guys promising to put me on page 1 of Google®.  The two most common pitches I get from them.

  1. If I could put you on page 1 of Google, would that be worth $3000 to you?
  2. I was on the internet and noticed your website was not on page 1 of Google.

Here are a few the responses I have used.

  1. I don't believe you can do it.
  2. I am getting tons of these calls.  For all of the telemarketers to find my site, I must be placed well on Google®.
  3. What is the name of your company?    I am on Google®.  You can't even get your own company page 1?
  4. This is my cell number and its 4:00am here.  Give me your cell number and I will call me back at 4:00am your time.
  5. I am already on page 1 and I did it for free.
  6. Who are you with?  Never heard of you.  CLICK
  7. I can put you on page 1 of Google® for $1500.
  8. I just signed a contract with your competitor for $4500.
  9. Can you please hold?  Shucks I forgot I had someone on hold.
  10. E-mail me the information and I will call you back.
  11. What do you mean?  What is Google®?
  12. Why is being on page 1 a good thing?
  13. I am busy with clients can you call me back on Saturday afternoon?
  14. How much to get me on page 2?

All kidding aside, the sharks have identified Realtors® as easy suckers.  I get 100+ spam e-mails a day and a dozen or two similar phone calls a week.  It is obvious that many in our business are being taken regularly for large sums of money or else there would not be so many sharks circling.

The "you found me, so I must already be doing something right" line is always a good one!

Posted by Robert Rauf (HomeBridge Financial Services (NJ)) over 7 years ago

Great list.  I would get caller ID and return some of those calls at the most opportune time.

I sympathize with you Randy. It's bad enough receiving these calls during the day and evening hours but 4am-5am! AAARRRRGGGHHHHH!! And I will be borrowing a couple of your responses, especially #2 and #11, thanks!

Randy...I used to get a lot of these calls also, until AR got me at the top of page one.

Posted by William Feela, Realtor, Whispering Pines Realty 651-674-5999 No. (WHISPERING PINES REALTY) over 7 years ago

Dennis - In that case U am most of page 1.

Robert - One of my favorites.

Mike - You just get a boiler room.  I have even been on the phone with one of these guys and someone else from their office is also calling.

Suzi - We call it the price of paradise.

William - I think many of these folks are finding me on AR.

Randy - well my calls seem to come in all week long, and they have increased lately, in addition to the broadcast voicemails to my cell about how to make more money.

I often wonder just how many people they CAN get on Page 1 of Google. I've used Robert's line a few times, but thty launch into another aspect of their script. Thanks, not interested. Bye!

Jeff - In order for them to be successful with everyone they promise, Google will need to make page 1 a mile long.

I used number five today. The caller actually hung up on me. I was so...proud!

I have a basic rule...thanks to caller ID if the cell shows it is a 1-800 or a 1-866 I do NOT answer it...ever!

Gary - It seems like the number of calls is increasing.  I guess I need to make them hang up faster too.

Barabra-Jo - I may be forced to take that tactic.  I have had out of state clients and real estate agents call from a toll free number at their office.  Being in Hawaii, we do get a larger than normal percentage of relocations.

Posted by Randy Prothero, Hawaii REALTOR, (808) 384-5645 (eXp Realty) over 7 years ago

I agree that the number of these calls is increasing! I usually respond with #2 or 5, or some variation on the theme that I understand search engine marketing and have no interest in the search term they're trying to tell me about, and I already rank on page 1 for the terms that do matter to me, I have no plans to throw money away and please stop calling...   The ones who actually get it give up quickly enough, but it's the callers who are only working from a script and keep trying to sell me something they don't even understand that drive me nuts.  I can't imagine how much worse it would be if they started calling me at 4 or 5 AM!

Sara - You make a good pint.  The folks calling are just telemarketers in a boiler room.  They rarely know anything about what they are trying to sell, just reading a script.

Hey Randy, I keep receiving emails from companies like this. Chances are they use spammy tactics to rank sites, which is what caused the whole JC Penney Google fiasco I posted about on my blog. This is why I keep my SEO in-house :)

Posted by Lydia Lucas (Prudential CT Realty) over 7 years ago

Even the big guys try to game the system.  I bet someone got fired for that.

Posted by Randy Prothero, Hawaii REALTOR, (808) 384-5645 (eXp Realty) over 7 years ago

But how do you get on page one of google??? :)

Posted by Karen McLinden, Relax and follow me...I know the way home. (Beautiful Day Real Estate) over 7 years ago

Good contact and a well built site.  If I type me name I come up page 1 everytime. LOL

Three small letters I will share that are far cheaper than anything these guys offer . . . I-D-X.  A good custom IDX will go a long long way.

Posted by Kathleen West, Flagler County & Palm Coast Realtor (Trademark Realty Group of Palm Coast) over 7 years ago

Kathleen - My website would be lacking without IDX.

Randy I generally use #10 from your list and they never send me information or price lists....:)

Endre - They will almost never send you anything.

Randy, between true as SEO professionals, we consider the people who solicit for what they say are SEO services, via phone and fax, to be nothing more than spammers. Through SEO professionals would never engage in such practices.

Enjoyed your post, but, found your statement about typing in your name in the search engine and coming up on page 1 not really impressive. I would be much more impressed, and I know it would be more valuable to you, if your site or blog came up on page 1 when someone typed in Mililani real estate. Hey, just my two cents… I think you have a great site and blog.

Judi - I would equally be impressed if your company popped up on page 1 for SEO for Realtors.
