Mililani Scholastic Chess Player Wins Big in Las Vegas

Hawaii Chess Federation logoEvan Zheng, a Mililani Middle School student traveled to Las Vegas to play in the 2010 National Open Chess Tournament and is returning home with $6078.00 in his pocket.

Evan was one of several Hawaii chess players to compete in the event.  Being an open tournament there was no age restrictions, Evan competed with adults in his rating section.  After 7 rounds Evan finished in clear 1st place in the 1500 and under section ("C" class) with a score of 6.5 points (6 wins and 1 draw).

Evan's chess coach Chet Gionson won $1266.00 by finishing in 4th place in the 2100 and under section (expert level).  Former Hawaii player Ruben Ondangon took home $303.78 by finishing 6th in the same section.

Several other Hawaii players had strong showings finishing just out of the money in their sections.
