Hawaii Randy's Real Estate Opinions: Spam From Other Realtors

Spam From Other Realtors

A pet peeve of mine and many of my Realtor® friends is the barrage of e-mail spam from other Realtors®.

Trust me I check the MLS daily.  I know the inventory my clients are looking for.  I do not need every new agent in town pointing them out to me one at a time.

The two groups that are the most obnoxious are:                                       Email box

  • The ones who attach 5 MB files to them and choke the box.
  • The ones who send from a server that goes through my junk mail filters because they do not send from an e-mail account.

Before I forget I would also like to add Loan Officers who keep sending apple pie recipes to me.  I will never use your services or take the time to bake apple pie.

Here, here!!!

I love it when a prospective buyer calls and I have to wait for 150 pieces of spam to download before I can get the list of homes they are interested in touring.

IMO, these agents have been suckered by the bulk e-mail vendors.

You are SOOO right!  I guess the email providers and the flyer printers would be very distressed if this became a common opinion.  If i didn't already show it, it's because i don't waste my buyers' time on the wrong houses!  (now, that being said, i do like the price reduced emails for properties i did actually show-since there is occasionally that on-the-fence buyer who might want to know about it and they send these out before updating MLS)

Agree!  With a slower market it is getting worse and worse and worse!   More and more stuff everyday!

I agree too!  Stop sending us all that junk!

I wonder if the same agents bomb their clients the same way?  I can't believe it is effective.

Even if it is proven effective, I won't do it.  It is one thing to send your new listing to agents in your office or a few in the community that you have an established relationship with.  It is another to send it to everyone in the MLS system, several times a day.

Just a thought....

Agent A has a client who has time to see 8 properties tomorrow.  There are 12 properties available that meet their client's criteria.  One is listed by an agent who spams Agent A from one of those systems that defeats his junk mail filters.  What are the odds that his or her listing will be one of the 8 properties shown that day?

Who knows, if I keep getting ten e-mails a day on property for sale in the Florida Keys, I might just end up moving there!

In Las Vegas we get at least 100 email flyers from other agents every week. I haven't seen any indications that this has any effect on them selling the home any faster.

The one interesting fact is that the majority of the agents sending these spams are agents I have heard of or run into before.

It amazes me to get so much junk mail from other agents.  If we all did it where would we be.  I am ok with targeted emails from agents, but to receive emails from listings 50 to a  hundred miles away is really a problem.

David - I just keep adding them to my junk filter.  Unfortunately if they ever have a message worth readin i will never see it.

Thank you!

Spam is not a necessary evil.

Spam is not part of life, you can fight it by knowing how to change your web published email address every 6 months.  I wrote a long long blog about slowing down. All for free. I even started a non-profit called RealtorSpam.org

Did you know that your local MLS system is responsible for a ton of your spam?

Frank - If you have any web presence as I do including the MLS you will get a lot of spam.  What irritates many of us is other Realtors blasting us with their listings and using servers that randomize the e-mail address to get past our spam filters.  I also have a loan officer that keeps sending apple pie recipes the same way.

Hello Randy,

My web presences don't show my email address. If I must, that email will get deleted monthly. As for the MLS, I also change the email from FrankDO NOTSPAM ME@... every month or so.

I can not change my e-mail addresses.  I have too much advertising and too many websites promoting my e-mail address.
